It's not free from wear either, signs of lacquer checking around the sides of the guitar. A Taylor/Fishman preamp has been installed into the upper side of the guitar, with the input jack accessible through the end pin. There's now a small ply cover, no bigger than a match box covering what used to be a battery compartment.

The top has been refinished at some stage after a crack repair, the pickguard has also been replaced leaving marks from the previous one. This 'left-hooker' version has had a few changes and modifications, but the essence and character still remains. The J-200 is still at the forefront of the Gibson acoustic line, commonly seen in both natural and sunburst finishes. In the eyes of a collector the rosewood J-200's are the most sought after, but the maple models are still regarded up there with the best. This changed the overall tone immensely, now a much brighter snappy sound. In 1948 a huge change was made, maple now being the choice wood for the back and sides of the guitar. You could pick one of these bad boys up for $200 in 1938 when they were first released, originally built with rosewood back and sides for a much rounder sound. The physical boundaries are worth overcoming, the tone and bite of a J-200 is second to none.
It's large 16 7/8" body size lends an enormous amount of volume, but proving difficult to play to those with shorter arms. Seen in the hands of some of the finest musicians and performers, it's proven itself as the ultimate jumbo flattop.
