The top has been refinished at some stage after a crack repair, the pickguard has also been replaced leaving marks from the previous one. This 'left-hooker' version has had a few changes and modifications, but the essence and character still remains. The J-200 is still at the forefront of the Gibson acoustic line, commonly seen in both natural and sunburst finishes. In the eyes of a collector the rosewood J-200's are the most sought after, but the maple models are still regarded up there with the best. This changed the overall tone immensely, now a much brighter snappy sound. In 1948 a huge change was made, maple now being the choice wood for the back and sides of the guitar. You could pick one of these bad boys up for $200 in 1938 when they were first released, originally built with rosewood back and sides for a much rounder sound. The physical boundaries are worth overcoming, the tone and bite of a J-200 is second to none.
